Visitor Requirements for United Kingdom

Everything you need to know before travelling to the UK

Before you travel to the United Kingdom, it is crucial to understand the entry rules so your arrival is smooth and straightforward. All international visitors must hold valid documents and follow the conditions set by the UK immigration authorities.

Passport requirements
  • Your passport must be valid for the full length of your stay in the UK.

  • It should contain at least one(1) blank page for entry and exit stamps.

  • Your passport must be in good condition. Heavily damaged passports may be refused.

Visa requirements

Most travellers need either a visa or an electronic travel authorisation before entering the UK. The option you need depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Travellers who already hold UK immigration permission usually do not need an electronic travel authorisation.

1. Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The ETA applies to eligible visa-exempt nationals visiting the UK for short stays such as tourism, family visits, or business. As the scheme is being rolled out gradually, travellers should confirm whether their nationality requires an ETA before travelling.

2. Standard Visitor Visa

Suitable for tourism, business meetings, short courses, and visiting family or friends.

3. Student Visa

Required for those studying at the UK’s approved education providers.

4. Other visa categories

Work, long-term stays, and specific professional activities may require different visas.

Please note: Permission to travel does not guarantee entry. The UK border officer will take the final decision on arrival.

Health requirements
  • There are no routine vaccination requirements for short visits.

  • Some long-stay visas may require a health check depending on nationality and length of stay.

  • Travellers should review current health advice for their home country before departure.

Arrival requirements
  • You may be asked to show a return or onward ticket.

  • Proof of sufficient funds to support your stay may be requested.

  • Accommodation details, such as hotel bookings or host information, may be required.

  • Travel insurance is highly recommended for all visitors.

  • Some travellers may need to complete an online form or provide biometric details before travel, depending on nationality and visa type.

Customs rules

The UK has clear rules on goods that can be brought into the country.

Items you must declare
  • Cash totalling £10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies, when entering from outside the UK.

  • Certain goods that are restricted or controlled. Travellers should check which items fall into this category.

Prohibited items

Examples include illegal drugs, weapons without the correct permits, offensive weapons, counterfeit goods, and items that may risk public safety or the environment.

Currency regulations
  • You must declare £10,000 or more in cash, or the equivalent in other currencies, if travelling from outside the UK.

  • You can bring any amount of money, but larger sums must be declared.

  • It is sensible to keep exchange or withdrawal receipts for reference.

  • The currency of the United Kingdom is the pound sterling(GBP), shown with the symbol £.

  • Some nationalities may have additional requirements.

  • Documents should be in English or accompanied by certified translations.

  • Keep copies of key documents separate from the originals in case of loss.
